ATLANTA – The battle against leukemia and other blood cancers recently received a boost thanks to Jeffery’s Voice, a recently formed public charity.
Nancy Horne, President and founder of Jeffery’s Voice, presented a major donation to the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University to establish a leukemia research fund. The fund will be used to support leukemia and blood cancer research conducted by the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Winship.
Jeffrey’s Voice is a non-profit public charity dedicated to the search for a cure for leukemia and blood cancers. The charity is named for Jeffery Hammond Horne, Nancy’s son, a victim of Acute Mylogenous Leukemia, and his younger brother and bone marrow/stem cell transplant donor, Brian Daniel Horne. Jeffrey Horne succumbed to leukemia at the age of 20 years. Seventeen weeks after losing his brother, Brian Horne died of sudden cardiac arrest and acute respiratory failure at the age of 19.
“Both of our sons were vocal in expressing the need for research for a cure,” said Nancy. “They participated in a variety of charitable activities on behalf of this cause. This donation by Jeffrey’s Voice to Winship will establish a research fund designed to ensure – through innovative research — that their message of inspiration and hope for a cure continues to be heard.”
The bone Marrow Transplant Program at Winship recently conducted its 3,000 transplant, which is a milestone that puts the program in the company of the most elite programs in the country.
“We very much appreciate Jeffrey’s Voice and the Horne family’s belief in our program and their dedication to the fight against leukemia and blood cancers,” said Edmund Waller, MD, PhD, director of the Emory Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Transplant program. “We are making good progress, but so much more needs to be done. Thanks to Jeffrey’s Voice, we are able to continue research to make bone marrow, peripheral blood stem cell and cord blood transplants safer and more effective.”
